Recent updates from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) are introducing new rules around the use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). These changes are designed to improve environmental safety and reduce risks to wildlife, particularly from secondary poisoning.

What Are SGARs?
Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are a class of professional rodent bait products commonly used in pest control.
They include active ingredients such as:
- Brodifacoum
- Bromadiolone
- Difenacoum
- Difethialone
- Flocoumafen
These products are still available for professional use but are now subject to stricter regulatory controls.
Are SGARs Banned?
No. SGARs are not banned.
However, from 24 March 2026, their use will be managed under a temporary permit system while the APVMA continues its regulatory review.
This means:
- Products remain available for professional pest management use
- Use is now governed by specific conditions and restrictions
- A longer-term framework may classify SGARs as restricted chemical products in the future
Importantly, other rodent control products such as first-generation anticoagulants and non-anticoagulant options are not affected by these changes.
What’s changing?
Key updates include:
- More restrictions on outdoor bait placement
- Mandatory use of tamper-resistant bait stations in many situations
- Limits on continuous baiting without review
- Increased focus on monitoring and environmental protection
These measures aim to reduce risk to pets, wildlife, and non-target animals.
What this means for rodent control
Rodent management will continue to be effective but more structured. Professional technicians must now follow stricter guidelines on placement, duration, and monitoring of baiting programs.
However, it’s important to understand that baiting is only one part of effective rodent control.
A proper program may also include:
- Exclusion (sealing entry points)
- Live trapping
- Snap traps
- Glue boards (where appropriate)
- Ongoing monitoring and prevention
